Release Blitz: Kiss and Fake Up by Carrie Aarons ~ 4 stars

Kiss and Fake Up by Carrie Aarons is live!

This summer was supposed to be an escape from the city and the demons lurking within it. Too bad the minute I arrive at the beach house I’m sharing with friends, the guy I swore I’d never talk to again in my life walks through the door.

Now I’m not only stuck hiding out from an ex who won’t leave me alone, but with someone who screwed me over before he could even be considered an ex.

That’s right, two years ago Campbell Whitlock double booked me on our fourth date. As in, had a girl show up to the table where he was feeding me off his own fork and barely disguising it as foreplay. Meanwhile, my head and heart had been completely on board to make our relationship more serious.

But a leggy blonde foiled that plan, and I’ve hated him on sight since. The ex-Marine turned millionaire restauranteur didn’t even have the decency to follow me with an apology as I ran out of his own establishment.

It’s just my luck that I’m forced to room right next door to my nemesis, who couldn’t be acting more like a saint if he tried. And then the impossible happens; my ex hunts me down to deliver loaded threats and the fear I thought I’d left behind in Manhattan. Who is the only person to witness it? Campbell, of course.

His apology tour apparently extends to offering himself up as my fake boyfriend to scare off my stalker. While the plan is moronic and means having to spend more time with him, the danger I feel is real. Having a hulking, intimidating boyfriend, fake or not, might be exactly what I need.

With every passing day, pretend date, emotional gaze and midnight run-in, our relationship starts to feel less like a deal and more like something very similar to the connection I thought we had years ago. Even though I promised myself I’d never give him a second chance.

But what happens when the person protecting me starts to feel like the one I want to trust forever?
And how will I recover if his favor was done only to gain forgiveness, instead of a chance at falling in love?

Review

Campbell Whitlock has spent every day of the past two years kicking himself for letting Heather walk out of his restaurant. When he finds out they’ll be spending the summer together, he’s determined to get her to forgive him, and see him in a different light. But when his attempt at faking a relationship to keep her safe changes to very real feelings, he’s even more resolved to show her that he’s the man she’s been waiting for.

On top of her most recent relationship troubles, Heather has just found out that the man she almost completely fell for two years ago will be spending the summer in the Hamptons along with their mutual friends. Pissed, afraid and confused, she tries to ice him out. But when Campbell begins to care for her and steps up for her, she begins to feel all the old feelings coming back.

I liked this romance. The suspense aspects were a bit scary (even though it was pretty light), but the overall vibe of the book was still laid-back and fun enough for me to enjoy.

Review

This is my first M. Robinson read – Jax isn’t the only person going around getting ‘firsts’ lol! Verdict: I LOVED IT!

“After all these years.
All the memories.
I didn’t know…
She was my endgame.”

Jax & Sophie were a couple that shouldn’t have been together, but they couldn’t stay away from each other. Since their teens, when they tried to fight the connection between them, the intense chemistry between them made it impossible for them stay apart forever.

Jax & Sophie ate up every second of my free time; I started reading late yesterday and found it difficult to put down. Their emotions; the tension and angst had me on the proverbial edge of my seat.

I absolutely loved Jax. He was seductive, infuriating, and charming, complete with just the right amount of dirty talk. He knew he had messed up once, and he wanted to ensure that he did all that he could the second time around to win Sophie back, even if it meant losing his privacy.

“I’m going to make you love me again.”

From the very start, I admired Sophie’s strength of character. Like Jax, she had faults, but I understood her reasons. And though she put up a front, you could see right through it; she loved Jax. Her insecurities were a large part of what stood in her way.

“I don’t trust you not to hurt me again.”

I recommend this book wholeheartedly & unreservedly. M. Robinson takes you on a journey that entertains as well as almost certainly seems to reveal certain parts of her own personal story.

Chapter One

It is a truth universally acknowledged that to trick a rich man out of a large sum of money, one must be very clever and very patient.

In the hotel coffee shop, I stopped drumming my fingers on the table and with great effort stilled my twitching foot. I’d been born clever, but the whole patience thing was taking a lot longer.

Across the room, Heather sat serenely, her rolling suitcase beside her, nose buried in a book on the politics of Silicon Valley. Her thick, dark hair was pulled into a high ponytail and the tortoiseshell glasses perched on the edge of her tiny nose gave her a studious air. She wore a tattered gray Boston Red Sox T-shirt that dwarfed her in an adorable way.

She looked perfect. It had taken me forever to come up with the character’s exact look, but it was going to work. I just knew it. The team had made solid progress with our new San Francisco targets; I estimated we’d hear from half of them within the next week, which was pretty typical. But nabbing this one would make the road trip an unqualified success.

“How’s the book?” I murmured. The miniscule mic, invisible below my dress’s collar, transmitted to an equally covert bud in Heather’s ear.

“Incomprehensible,” Heather muttered without moving her lips. “Did you actually read this?”

Blech. I grimaced. “Every word, unfortunately. He’s babbled about it non-stop on LinkedIn.”

I looked between the shop’s door to the lobby and its door to the street. Since he lived in a building around the corner, he’d most likely enter from the street. Glancing down at my watch, I sat up straighter. It was 8:45 a.m. In the past year, Linc Townsend had posted three times before 9:00 a.m. on his Twitter page that the only proper way to start a Friday morning was with a flat white from this particular coffee locale.

There! The door to the street swung open, revealing a tall man in his late thirties. His trademark white-blond hair was cropped close to his head. “Showtime,” I whispered to Heather. “Turn slightly so that the book is more obvious and he can see your shirt.”

Heather took a sip from the cup on her table and angled herself to face the counter directly. She raised the book so that it rested on the table, the front cover obvious. Then she pushed back her shoulders; the logo on her shirt floated above the book.

Townsend strode to the register and smiled at the barista. “My usual.” After paying, he walked to the edge of the counter to wait for his drink. Damn it, he was pulling out his phone. If he got immersed in scrolling, he might not look up. He might not see her at all.

My gaze lit on the tray of lids, pitchers, and sugars at the edge of the counter. “Get up and get some milk for your drink,” I whispered. “Bring the book.”

Heather stood, her eyes still looking down at the pages. Then she transferred the book to one hand, keeping her finger inserted halfway, the picture of someone who couldn’t bear to lose her place. She picked up the coffee cup with the other and glided across the shop, looking very much the intense grad student she was pretending to be.

“Excuse me,” she said softly to Townsend without looking at him. She put her cup on the counter and poured milk with the same hand, propping the book on the counter with the other.

As he moved a foot away to allow her some space, he gave a fleeting look at her face and at the book on the counter.

I grinned. Five, four, three, two …

“What do you think of this book?” he asked Heather, tapping the hardcover. “I’m very familiar with it.” I bit my smile under control and waited for Heather’s opening line. I’d worked hard on it.

Heather looked up at Townsend, hazel eyes wide as if he’d startled her. Then she let her brow furrow and her mouth fold into a cute purse, as if she were seriously considering the question. “It’s uneven,” she finally said, meeting his gaze directly. “Some chapters are engaging and thought-provoking. But others are much less impressive.”

Nodding to herself as though her opinion was the final word on the matter, she gave him a small dismissive smile and took her coffee and book back to her table. I suppressed a laugh. Heather was such a pro. I might write the lines, but Heather always nailed the delivery.

Townsend gaped at her, his mouth slightly parted. His gaze traveled from the beat-up sneakers on her feet, up the length of her faded jeans, and rested on the Red Sox T-shirt. Then he looked at Heather’s face, once again absorbed in the book. His gaze softened on the glasses and ponytail.

Gotcha. I had agreed with one of Andie’s key assessments from her deep dive into Linc Townsend’s life: even though high school was twenty years in Townsend’s past, he was still nostalgic about the bespectacled brunette beauty he’d dated his senior year. Before she dumped him on her way to Harvard.

He was so distracted that the barista had to say “Linc” twice when his flat white was ready.

Here we go. Adrenaline pulsed through my veins. I cleared my throat, ready. Townsend hesitated for only a moment before crossing the room and sitting, uninvited, in the other chair at Heather’s table. She looked up, annoyance clear on her face. “Wh –ah, can I help you?”

His words transmitted clearly through the mic clipped to Heather’s bra. “You’ve intrigued me. I want to know which chapters you found worthwhile and which were lacking.”

Taking a deep breath, I spoke as quickly and clearly as I could. Heather was used to the ventriloquist act, but if I flubbed a word, she would sound unnatural. “I enjoyed the chapters about how Silicon Valley types are extreme idealists. How life is just a matter of discovering great ideas through conversation, innovation, and education.” I paused so Heather could catch up. As soon as Heather spouted “education,” I started again. “But I think the book’s conclusion that Silicon Valley is a libertarian-like ideology within the Democrat Party—well, that’s a bit of a stretch.”

Heather delivered the last sentence flawlessly and raised her eyebrows. “Satisfied?”

Linc Townsend set his flat white on the table and leaned forward. I waited for a quick lecture of approval, especially since, as the creator of a successful tech start-up, he’d been quoted at length in the parts of the book that Heather said she liked.

But he asked her an important question before mansplaining. “What is your name?” He offered a manicured hand across the table.

We’d hooked him already.

Review

Kristen Kringle is back home to take care of her dad who’s broken his leg and check on the family business. When she gets stranded on the way home, her rescuer turns out to be the new tree farm manager, Paul, that her dad recently hired. This would be all well and good, except Kristen and Paul can’t seem to get along. Even after finding out the family inn is in huge financial trouble, Kristen just can’t seem to figure out why she can’t stop thinking about Paul.

Paul has heard a lot about the Chris Kringle’s three children, but meeting Kristen is a shock. She’s seems to embody the life he left behind with no regrets. He knows she’s leaving once her work is done in Denver with the inn, but he can’t help finding ways to be around her. This Christmas, he’s hoping his life turns out to be a clichéd Hallmark movie. This business man turned tree whisperer sure has his work cut out for him.

I liked this read, and found it to be an intriguing & interesting debut to the series. The way Paul and Kay-Kay (lol) bantered and fought was both funny and hot. Though neither of them truly put a damper on Christmas enough to live up to the book’s title, I did enjoy their relationship’s development. I also wished that I would have gotten more of Paul’s background so his character would have been a little more fleshed-out.

That being said, though, I am super excited to see how the other two siblings’ stories will play out.

I recommend this sweet, funny and steamy Christmas-y read.

What made a good girlfriend?

Someone who was understanding. Kind. Someone who listened and baked cute, little cupcakes and remembered things like anniversaries and their boyfriends’ favorite meals.

In a word, someone who wasn’t Tammy.

She wasn’t good with mush, couldn’t stand watching a romantic movie without wanting to hurl. She didn’t have songs with her significant others. Hell, she didn’t have significant others.

Then . . . Fletcher.

He was just a co-worker who needed a fake girlfriend to take to a wedding, one who wouldn’t get attached like all the other women who fell in love with him at the drop of a hat and then required him to do outlandish things like solicit fake girlfriends.

In another word, he needed Tammy and her cold, dead heart.

So she did him a solid, went to the wedding, and charmed everyone while staying blissfully unattached.

But then Fletcher fell for her.

Review

Veritas is a complex, deep read that will make you think.

Maria Tavares is 34 and one of the best attorneys at her firm, yet her contributions are overlooked and she is passed over for partner repeatedly. Determined to try to figure out if she truly is the obstacle to her life moving forward, she decides to go to therapy. The decision has a domino effect, bringing her past, present and future together in a way she never planned.

“Sometimes the things we thought we wanted the most aren’t the things that are right for us.”

Jordan Kovacs can’t get the beautiful woman with whom he spent one glorious night with last October, but she’s made it clear that she wants to forget him and pretend their night together never happened. Known to not back down from a challenge, Jordan has tried every trick in his arsenal to have Maria in his arms again. Victory comes when he accepts an invitation from the woman herself to a wedding as her plus one. Knowing he has but a short time, Jordan tries not to spook Maria with how quickly his feelings for her have grown, but secrets on both their parts could threaten what shaky foundation they already have.

“I wanted Maria Tavares – breakfast, lunch and dinner, and any other way I could have her… I wanted to be the source of her happiness and her scorn.”

With lots of characters, emotions and a quick pace, Veritas is a read that makes sure you have to pay attention in order for the pieces of the puzzle to fit and fall into place. You will run the gamut of emotions for each of the characters as you read, especially Maria, as she she struggles with her identity and tries to sort out her feelings. Relinquishing control has never been her forte, and she struggles throughout the book. By the end of the book, though, I had a healthier respect for her, as she grew and matured.

I recommend this steamy, off-the-charts-chemistry, complicated read. You’ll be glued to its pages, and thinking about it days afterward.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an ARC of this book.

Review

This romance had me glued to its pages.

Laci is the type of heroine who has been knocked around a few times by life. Somehow, she’s found a way to roll with the punches, and her decision to make Oak Bend her home is part of her decision to keep on standing. When she recognises Cooper, her high school crush, is her next door neighbour, she is both thrilled and scared about how it makes her feel. But Cooper is everything she never knew she needed and then some. He’s patient as she figures out her next steps, and really sweet with Ivy. I loved them all! Cooper has never forgotten his crush on Laci, and when she returns to his hometown, he’s excited to finally have a chance to be with her. But Laci’s walls aren’t the only obstacle in his way.

Evelyn Sola is a must-read for me. Her romances have large doses of reality, while giving us the stuff of dreams. Make Me has emotion, witty banter and a really great romance story.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly and unreservedly.

Excerpt

Copyright 2021 Evelyn Sola

Just as I approach the corner, I’m hit on the shoulder by another body. I’m pushed to the wall, and the mountain of books in my hands crashes to the floor. The red folder holding my English term paper lands on top of the heap.

“Watch where you’re going!” the person who bumped says.

She doesn’t have the decency to stop, but by the sound of her giggles, I know who it is. And there’s no way the school’s most popular senior would give me the time of day. I sigh and drop to the floor to pick up my things. My heart starts to beat erratically because if there’s one thing I know—wherever Candace is, he’s never too far behind.

I’m proven right. A pair of black boots enters my line of vision. Cooper Stevens. Those are his boots. He was wearing them the very first time I saw him, and I remember wanting to be swallowed up by the ground. The only thing that saved me from total embarrassment was the fact that I know someone like him would never notice someone like me.

I hold my breath while he approaches and quickly turn to my books. Please leave. Please leave. Please leave. I busy myself arranging my books. I won’t stand up until he walks past me. Only he doesn’t. He drops down to my level and grabs my red folder. Instead of handing it to me, he opens it and starts to look through the pages.

I finally find the courage to look at him, and our eyes lock. For the first time ever, I notice the hazel flecks around his brown eyes. I look away and drop my head, and because this is the day from hell, my glasses slide off my face and land on the floor.

We reach for them at the same time, and his large hand ends up covering mine. I let out a small sound, and I say a silent prayer that he didn’t hear it. I note the contrast of our skin tones, his white hand covering my brown one before I pull mine away. He lifts my glasses and brings them to my face. I’m as still as a statue while I look down at the linoleum floor. He moves closer and slides the glasses back onto my face. I take a deep breath and bask in the smell of his leather jacket mixed with his fruity shampoo.

When he gets the glasses on my face, he moves his hands behind my ears to make sure they are secure.

“You okay?” he asks. He lifts my chin and forces me to look at him.

Like a deer in headlights, all I can do is stare.

“Be careful next time, Laces,” he whispers.

I lick my dry lips. “Um, my name is—” The words get locked in my throat. I grab my books and finally stand up. He stands right along with me. When we’re both upright, he takes a step closer.

“Your name is what?” he asks. He hands me my folder, and when I take it from him, his fingers touch mine.

“Um, my name is—” I clear my throat and try again. The entire time he stares at me with an expression I can’t interpret. “My name isn’t, um—” I never get a chance to finish my sentence.

“Cooper!” Candace yells in the hallway. She runs over to us and grabs the sleeve of his leather jacket. “Come on! What are you still doing here with her?” She points at me without bothering to look in my direction. “Let’s go. You did your good deed of the day. Maybe you should tell her to run a flat iron through that hair.” The entire time he was being dragged away, his head was turned in my direction, until they turned the corner and he disappeared.

#ReleaseBlitz #ReviewBlitz: Hendrix by @mjfieldsbooks & @ChelseaCamaron ~ #4stars

The Caldwell Brothers are back and better than ever!

Start your binge with Hendrix for #99cents! https://geni.us/HendrixCaldwell

HENDRIX BLURB:

Hendrix Caldwell, the oldest of the Caldwell brothers, is the ever steady voice of reason out of the three Detroit—Rock City’s—wild boys. Focused, determined, and living with a chip on his shoulder, Hendrix is married to his bar, allowing no time for anything more than a casual hook up. Work hard, play harder—that is the Caldwell brothers’ way.

For Olivia Hemmingway, life is nothing except the school of hard knocks. Born as the consequence of a one night stand, Olivia didn’t have the childhood found in movies and books. However, she’s all grown up now and completely on her own. Drowning in debt, she is looking for a small break in life, but the hits just keep on coming.

One night, one charity event, two masks hiding them from the world and each other… Two people let go and share the best of each other in a luxury hotel’s storage closet for one night they both can’t forget. One night they both revisit in their dreams.

What happens when two worlds collide not once, but twice? When they find out who was behind the mask, will sparks fly, or will their past demons keep them apart?

Review

The Caldwell brothers, Hendrix, Morrison & Jagger, are struggling to move past the death of their mother. Raised in a home where she was their only source of love and light, they are not only rough around the edges, but wary of getting close to any female.

When Jagger begs Hendrix to take his place at a Valentine’s Day shindig, no one foresees how that night would change their lives, especially that of Hendrix. After quite possibly the hottest hookup of his life in a janitor’s closet, Hendrix’s mystery lady vanishes. Intrigued, yet bothered by how much he continues to think of her, he doesn’t quite know what to do with his memories of her. When she turns out to be his newest hire while rousing his protective instincts, Hendrix soon realises that love may not be a fairytale, after all.

Olivia is trying to live life on her terms. Deeply scarred by her past, her coping mechanism has carried her thus far, but she is still stuck. A one night stand challenges her view of intimacy, but she is unprepared for the way Hendrix re-enters and occupies her mind, heart and life. When she has to face her past, she soon realises that Hendrix, with his broody, domineering and possessive self is there to stay.

I enjoyed the read for the most part. The authors handled the topic of abuse in a unique way, giving the heroine an odd (very odd!) coping mechanism. There were moments I wondered about how the authors viewed safe sex and contraceptives, but overall, I enjoyed the book. I look forward to reading Morrison & Jagger’s stories, and seeing how love helps heal their grief.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an ARC of this book.

Review

Attempting to escape the pressure of a lawsuit while struggling with the idea of the man he’s become, Caleb escapes to New York to hang out with his friend, Dex Truitt. While visiting his office, he catches a glimpse of a woman and though he doesn’t know if he’ll ever see her again, he can’t shake her from his memory. When he realises she works for Dex, he finagles his way into her space, but ashamed at his impending case, pretends to be someone else – Mac.

Geneva aka Gigi has landed a coveted role that has not only boosted her self-confidence, but also goes a long way towards improving her and her sister’s standard of living. From her first day on the job, she is entranced by Mac. He seems to prove that there are decent men in the world, but there’s still something that seems off. When the truth comes out, will she still think of him as irresistible?

This slow burn, office romance was a good read. Caleb went above and beyond to get to know Geneva, and it was easy to forgive him as his growth became evident as the story progressed.

I recommend this book. You’ll enjoy the banter, humor and all-round good feels in it.
